MILLBURY, Ohio (AP) - Parents have complained to a northwest
Ohio school board that a chaperone sealed students in their hotel
rooms with duct tape during a high school choir trip.
At a heated meeting yesterday, Michelle Mata told the Lake Local
school board in Millbury that the tactic panicked her son during a
recent weekend trip to Chicago.
Sylvia Keeler says she may file charges. Her son, Mark Hummel,
said he worried he could be trapped during a fire.
School board president Timothy Krugh (kroo) told parents the
tape was meant to keep students safe.
Schools Superintendent Jim Witt says the tape would show if
students violated curfew but wouldn't have kept them from escaping
in an emergency.

o my god I wish duct tape was that strong. How old are these students are thep handycape and why are the students smoking they arent old enoth to have cigerats so yes they should be in truble and no way could the tap stop a highschool student from giting out of a room even if they used the hole role on a dore its not that good.
Can we say stupid and please the only thing this kids parent is seeing is lots of money. Just sue the school and teachers and git lots of money.

OK, OK.  When I was in high school the chaperones duct-taped our doors on every trip we went on.  I was in the band and we traveled a lot with more than 200 students.  It was normal.  We didn’t think anything of it and neither did they.  I mean, they can’t stay up all night and make sure the girls and boys aren’t sneaking out.  It was just there as a way to tell whether someone got out or not (broke curfew, etc.).  That’s all.  One strip, maybe two--not the whole door.  Oh and FYI--even if they taped the door shut from top to bottom the students can still push it open.  How old is this kid that he can’t just use some common sense?  Or is this just some case of a mother trying to use it as an excuse to get money from the State?  Come on folks just be cool.  You kind of have to roll with things sometimes.  Use that brain.

I support the chaperone in this endeavor…
There is a great deal of responsibility that goes along with taking children away from their school or church locations...These chaperones, as I have been one myself, are happy to be provide children with these extra curricular experiences to hopefully help each child become a more productive adult in our society…
However, children are going to be children if you don’t lay out the guidelines to them....Had their tape been broken without the chaperone knowing until morning, that would have meant the children had possibly been up to fun pranks outside their rooms---which also can be hugely dangerous to the children (danger is something that is very hard for children to see beforehand)--not to mention, their fun mischief could potentially get the teacher, chaperone fired for not watching/caring for the children properly.
These parents that are doing the fussing, should be the ones to take their children for outside experiences from now on

Oh my gosh, is that how they knew I had left my room and was sliding down the banister of the staircase?  I wondered how they knew. I wasn’t drinking or smoking but I did have fun sliding from the second floor to the first. grin

I chaperoned on a band field trip to Louisana when my daughter was in 8th grade (2004). We stayed at the LaQuinta Inn in Slidell, dang right we, chaperones, duct taped our kids doors. They can get out if something happened. Oh, by the way, if he had the window open, why could that not have been his escape? This parent needs to back off of this. At least the chaperones and principal cared enough to duct tape their doors.

You know, I grew up in the Mobile area, and when I went on trips, we had chaperones do this to us....I never thought anything of it; neither did my parents. That was over 10 years ago, too. The duct tape was never enough to actually seal us inside--just enough to show whether or not we snuck out.

SMOKING?? ON A SCHOOL TRIP? was this a college road trip? i would hope so, i wouldn’t even log in and try to defend “my brother” if he was smoking underage....plus taping the door is to make sure the door wasn’t opend not to lock them in a room. do u actually think that he was trying to TAPE the kids in the room, if he was trying to harm them, he could have taped their mouths shut and bound there feet with the sheets , i bet he would have if he knew all this crap would come about.

JuanMata,

Is smoking allowed at your brother’s school or on school trips?  Does your brother have a history of smoking?  Has he been in trouble before at school or on school sponsored trips? I am just curious why the asst. pricipal felt it necessary to go into the students room that night when I am sure he would have much rather had been sleeping in his own room.  I am not making light of your brother being upset about being trapped in a room during a fire but I do believe that too much is being made of a piece of duct tape.

I am at a lose, I see both side’s, I understand both side’s, But for the life of me I don’t understand, it’s not any different than puting something on your gas cap or whatever to see if your being abused, ripped off or tustworthy.
