resignation of his top housing official "with regret."
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson
announced this morning that he's resigning effective April 18th.
Jackson said he needs to attend to "personal and family matters."
The HUD secretary's statement did not mention a pending criminal
investigation. The FBI has been examining ties between Jackson and
a friend who was paid nearly $400,000 as a construction manager in
New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Jackson has been fending off
allegations of cronyism and favoritism involving HUD contractors
for the last two years.
In a statement, Bush says he's known Jackson for many years and
calls him "a great American success story." He describes Jackson
as "a strong leader and a good man."
