NEW YORK (AP) - Uno has taken his first winning steps atAmerica's top dog show.
The tri-colored 15-inch beagle bounded around the ring, trying
to grab his leash, and easily took the best of breed at the
Westminster Kennel Club's show. He advances to judging in the hound
group tonight in New York's Madison Square Garden.
No beagle has ever won best in show in the 100 times the award
has been presented. A beagle hasn't even won the hound group since
1939.
But barking and baying at every chance and with his white-tipped
tail wagging, 3-year-old Uno appeared to become an early crowd
favorite this morning. Handler Aaron Wilkerson says "he was being
his merry little hound self."
More than 2,600 dogs are competing for top prize. Best in show
will be presented tomorrow night.
