AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn University has made changes to itsemergency notification system, which drew complaints that it wasn't
used quickly enough after a student's killing and that it was used
too much during recent severe weather.
The University Senate voted yesterday to avoid using AU Alert
for severe weather watches, unless a system could have a
significant impact on campus.
The system was implemented last November. It is intended to
provide e-mails, text and voice messages to registered phone
numbers and e-mail addresses when emergency situations require
immediate action.
The slaying of 18-year-old freshman Lauren Burk on March 4th
prompted university officials to use it to warn of other
emergencies.
AU President Dr. Jay Gogue said he pushed for the weather alerts
on Friday because he wanted to warn any faculty or students who may
have been out in the impending storm.
