military planes is making its way to some of the areas hardest hit
by the recent earthquake.
The planes brought food, tents and lanterns, accounting for what
China's state-run news agency says is the first assistance from a
foreign military since the magnitude 7.9 quake.
Officials say most of the aid is being sent to a mountain area
in the northern part of the province that was among the hardest-hit
areas.
The government has put the confirmed death toll at more than
32,000.
China has also allowed foreign earthquake rescue experts to the
disaster area, after reversing its initial reluctance to accept
their help.
