WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security says it comes from "anabundance of caution," but federal authorities are warning law
enforcement agencies of a possible terror plot against the New York
City subway system this holiday season.
An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press says the FBI
has received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that
al-Qaida terrorists may have discussed attacking the subway system.
It says the discussion "reportedly involved the use of suicide
bombers or explosives" on subway and passenger rail lines in and
around New York City.
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security describes
the warning as a routine matter. No changes are being made to the
nation's threat level, but he says there may be an increased police
presence in New York and other large metropolitan areas.
The memo says there are no details to confirm the plot ever went
beyond "aspirational planning."
