PENTAGON (AP) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates continues to make sweeping changes in the Air Force chain of command. He's recommending that General Norton Schwartz be the next Air Force chief. A 35-year veteran, Schwartz has been commander of the
U.S. Transportation Command since September 2005.
Gates also formally sent the name of former Air Force officialMichael Donley to the White House to be the next secretary.
Last week, Gates announced that he was firing General Michael
Moseley from the chief's job and Michael Wynne as its top civilian.
He holds them accountable for failing to correct problems in
nuclear-related performance standards.
Gates is planning to visit Langley Air Force Base, Virginia,
later today to address service members and underscore the depth of
his concern about weaknesses in Air Force leadership.
