CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - He directed hundreds of episodes of showsincluding "The Waltons," "The Rockford Files," "Magnum, P.I."
and "In the Heat of the Night." But Ivan Dixon will be remembered
most for his role as Staff Sergeant James Kinchloe on the 60's TV
series "Hogan's Heroes."
His daughter says Dixon died Sunday at a hospital in Charlotte,
North Carolina, after a hemorrhage and of complications from kidney
failure. Dixon was 76.
Dixon's credits predate "Hogan's Heroes." He was a stunt double
for Sidney Poitier in the 1958 movie "The Defiant Ones." Poitier
said in a statement that you had to be careful working with Dixon
because he "was quite likely to walk off with the scene."
Dixon began his acting career on Broadway in plays including "A
Raisin in the Sun." On film, his credits include "Something of
Value," "Nothing But a Man" and the cult favorite "Car Wash."
