FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - American Airlines says it has canceledabout 300 flights today so its crews could inspect some wire
bundles aboard all of its MD-80 jets.
American initially put the number of cancellations at 200, but a
spokesman says that was a conservative estimate. He says the
airline prefers to hold off on cancellations as long as possible.
The matter has to do with making sure that the wiring is
properly secured.
The canceled flights represent less than 10 percent of the
scheduled service for the nation's largest carrier. The highest
concentrations are at American's hubs at Dallas-Fort Worth and
Chicago O'Hare international airports.
The need for the new inspections became known during an audit of
American by a joint team of inspectors from the Federal Aviation
Administration and the airline.
