According to a memo obtained by News 5 (see below), Kansas Congressman Todd Tiahrt is introducing legislation Thursday that would require the Air Force to rebid the $40 billion tanker contract. In February, that contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman/EADS. But Tiahrt, who used to work for Boeing, thinks the Chicago-based company should have won.

KC-X TANKER RECOMPETE LEGISLATION:  TO BE INTRODUCED TODAY

American Tanker Colleagues:

Mr. Tiahrt intends to introduce legislation around 2.00 PM TODAY regarding the KC-X Tanker contract.  Given the GAO vindication of our efforts to reverse this decision, it is clear that the current contract to EADS must not stand. This legislation will force the Department of Defense to recompete the KC-X Tanker contract under a fair process.

Under the new competition, the Department must consider national security and industrial base concerns.  It would also expand the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act to foreign companies, require an independent cost estimate, and ensure the Department considers the impact of additional regulatory burden placed on American companies, but not foreign competitors.

****The legislation would only take affect if the Pentagon fails to direct award the contract to The Boeing Company.****

We apologize for the late notice.  If you boss would like to be a co-sponsor, please let me know ASAP.  Again, Mr. Tiahrt expects to introduce the legislation around 2.00 PM TODAY.

Best regards,
Jim James L. Richardson

I get the feeling that the rest of the country is only hearing Boeing’s side of this.  Northrop-Grumman is headquarteed on the left coast.  Why aren’t we hearing any support from those nut jobs?

aecs1 , yes it is and thats sad it should be about what is the best tanker.

rosepedal,  We are hereing alot of lip service from basicly three parts of the country.  I just wonder what the rest of the country thinks.  Also with these guys from Kansas and Washington state crossing the line like they are I think many will distance themselves.  After all we are talking about politicians here!

aecs1 , well that being said and it sure is true.
how do you feel about a plastic tanker?

I am retired military and have been through alot of ethics training.  Mr. Tiahrt has stepped over the line with his last actions.  When you have a conflict of interest you should remove your self from involvement.  Mr. Tiahrt has done to opposite.  He obviously has a dog in the hunt.  There needs to be some type of investigation.  Come on the this guy worked for Boeing and is now submitting legislation that makes Boeing the only benefactor?  I hope the Airforce calls the politician’s bluff and sticks with their original decision.  Lets just see if there is enough support to cancel funding!

Do any of those clowns recognize just how stupid Tiahrt’s plan is?  He is saying right up front that he only has a problem with the selection process if his benefactor loses.  He will only try to stop progress if his client loses.

That is craziness and the guy should be laughed off of capital hill!

Tiahrt’s actions indicate that his interest are way more than for support for his constituates..

I would be willing to bet he has allot to lose finacially.
