Senator Richard Shelby's response to Defense Secretary Robert Gates's decision to accept limited rebidding on the Air Force refuelign tanker contract:

“This is the best of all options,” said Shelby. “It is important to remember that out of Boeing’s 111 complaints, the GAO concurred with a mere seven. The plan the Department of Defense has come up with is an appropriate solution to remedy the minor procedural flaws the GAO found in the initial award. It is vitally important that members of Congress support this expeditious path forward that not only satisfies the recommendations offered by GAO, but also ensures that the Air Force’s urgent and compelling need to field a tanker is met as quickly as possible.”

Who is right, who is wrong? Read the GAO findings. What did the Air Force want in the first place? How do each criteria factor in? Did they want big or small? What is the truth?

They are just trying to put a sugar coating on the pill that they are eventually going to make us swallow. Gates wanted to make it “fair” to both companies. Well why don’t we insist on a rebid for every contract which is awarded? We will know what the competition bid and all their specifics, so we can get back to the drawing board and underbid them. Oh yes, “this is the fair and impartial way of bidding”.

Is the government working for Boeing or Boeing working for the government? Ask yourself. Better yet, ask your local congressional representative.
