WHEREAS: The industrial base of Mobile County and the central gulf coast region provides this project with a stout supply of ready, willing and able American workers who will produce a piece of equipment vital to the long-term security of our nation and that of our allies around the globe;
WHEREAS: Northrop-Grumman’s plant in Mobile represents the termination of a broad supply chain associated with the construction of the KC-45A which will create and estimated 25,000 new U.S. manufacturing, engineering and other high-tech jobs;
WHEREAS: The men and women of the United States military deserve the absolute best equipment balancing the greatest protection of the war fighter with the greatest value to the taxpayer and The Mobile County Commission firmly believes that the meticulous competitive process undertaken by the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force produced a result doing just that;
WHEREAS: Mobile County Alabama from the earliest days of its colonial settlement to the present has remained a vital hub of domestic and international trade and today is welcoming a new breed of explorers seeking opportunities along the central gulf coast; including Australia based Austal Marine, in partnership with General Dynamics, which is building the next generation of warships for the U.S. Navy, to Germany’s Thyssen-Krupp Steel investing Four (4) Billion Dollars in a state of the art steel finishing facility, to Northrop-Grumman’s partnership with EADS North America to build the KC-45A, all creating American jobs for American workers;
WHEREAS: Mobile County and the central gulf coast region continue to rebuild and rejuvenate following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, as well as several smaller storms, within the last few years and economic development projects such as the KC-45A are the engine that is driving that recovery;
THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Mobile County Commission urges all members of Congress to consider first the needs of our war fighters and move with all deliberate speed to fund and implement the KC-45A tanker contract and, further, that a copy of this resolution be sent to Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, as soon as is practicable following its adoption.
