Folsom to Pelosi: Bewildered & Dismayed

Read Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom's letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi about her call for Congressional hearings about the Air Force Tanker contract awarded to Northrop Grumman and EADS. Folsom to Pelosi: Bewildered & Dismayed
Published: Tue, March 04, 2008 - 5:21 pm
Dear Madame Speaker:
Much to my dismay and with a measurable degree of bewilderment, I noted your call for
congressional hearings on the recently awarded Northrop Grumman EADS Airbus contract for
replacement of the Air Force tanker fleet. As you must be aware, this project will have an
extraordinary impact on the City of Mobile, Alabama, and the surrounding areas of our state.
Congressional hearings serve only to delay the positive impacts this project will have on
our state and our people.
As you well know, the exhaustive bidding and vendor selection process required over two
years to complete and should have answered any concerns you may now have. I find it hard to
understand your sudden scrutiny of this selection. The rules of the process were agreed upon in
advance, and the selection played out according to those rules. Basic impartiality requires that we
honor the outcome of this process regardless of personal preference.
A report from defense analyst Loren Thompson shows Northrop dominated the
competition in all measures of merit: mission capability, proposal risk, past performance,
cost/price, and integrated assessment. Thompson's report states with certainty that Northrop
Grumman's victory ''was not a close outcome."
Refueling tankers will be built in Mobile, resulting in the creation of over 2000 new jobs,
having a profound impact on the lives of thousands of Alabama families.
Should you pursue this arbitrary and subjective course of action, I implore you to
consider the implications these congressional hearings will have on the thousands of Americans
who stand to benefit from this new project in Mobile, Alabama.
Sincerely
Jim Folsom, Jr.
Lt. Governor

I also noticed that you never replied to the comments about Boeing using Italian and German frames on their Airplanes.

scubadude you must live in Seattle - I understand that you think this will outsource 30,000 jobs to France and that is not true - Have you read any of the information about the 49 states that would benefit from this being in Mobile?  Or did you just read Boeing saying that it would lose all of these jobs.  So does this mean that Boeing is now going to layoff 30,000 workers I don’t think so.  And right now Boeing is not even able to keep up with orders that they have for commercial jets how in the world do you think that they could produce these planes by 2013 and actually have a large number ready not 10 like they are saying - Airbus as said that it will have 49 planes ready by 2013.  Yes Boeing has been building planes for the past 50 years for the airforce but it looks like if they did win the contract it would take them the next 50 years to actually deliver the planes.

A men on that part about allstate! They pulled that on me a number of years ago.“if i didn’t increase my policy coverage or additional insurance,i would be dropped”.I caved in and did both and that didn’t stop the premiums from raising, they just pushed me into not being able to afford any.Being retired ,i could not afford $2000 ayear home owners and $1070 for flood insurance.the only time i ever was flooded was due to katrina and i wasn’t covered. It’s been two years now with no insurance, and $6000 i haven’t payed them. But it’s a gamble i would rather not take, but i don’t have any other options at this time.Be careful and don’t gamble if you have other options.I think i kept my policies with them for over 30 years.

i see the good citizens of alabama have sold their soul for a few jobs. bottom line our tax dollars going to france for our security. the french union at airbus is already screaming about outsourcing their jobs to america to produce these tankers.
airbus has thrown alabama a few crumbs, the 30,000 jobs will be in france. nice to know our defense is at the whim of the french unions (these unions have shut down transportation several times in the past few years- shutting down the whole country).

the population of mobile 400,000 is less than 1% of the u.s. population, hell let’s count all of alabama 4,600,000 is 1.5% of the u.s. population. if a poll were taken how many of rest of us would like the 30 billion of go to france? i do not think you will find any support for this deal outside of mobile .

the reason i stumbled on this web site is the lack of news coverage anywhere but alabama. as the facts become known, there will be a ground swell of negative reaction set to congress.

Ok now please write Allstate a letter telling them to stop breaking the law in Alabama by cancelling all the homeowners polices when they don’t have car or life insurance.  Thank you for trying to do your job.  This is the first thing I have ever heard of you doing.
