Folsom to Pelosi: Bewildered & Dismayed

Read Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom's letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi about her call for Congressional hearings about the Air Force Tanker contract awarded to Northrop Grumman and EADS. Folsom to Pelosi: Bewildered & Dismayed
Published: Tue, March 04, 2008 - 5:21 pm
Dear Madame Speaker:
Much to my dismay and with a measurable degree of bewilderment, I noted your call for
congressional hearings on the recently awarded Northrop Grumman EADS Airbus contract for
replacement of the Air Force tanker fleet. As you must be aware, this project will have an
extraordinary impact on the City of Mobile, Alabama, and the surrounding areas of our state.
Congressional hearings serve only to delay the positive impacts this project will have on
our state and our people.
As you well know, the exhaustive bidding and vendor selection process required over two
years to complete and should have answered any concerns you may now have. I find it hard to
understand your sudden scrutiny of this selection. The rules of the process were agreed upon in
advance, and the selection played out according to those rules. Basic impartiality requires that we
honor the outcome of this process regardless of personal preference.
A report from defense analyst Loren Thompson shows Northrop dominated the
competition in all measures of merit: mission capability, proposal risk, past performance,
cost/price, and integrated assessment. Thompson's report states with certainty that Northrop
Grumman's victory ''was not a close outcome."
Refueling tankers will be built in Mobile, resulting in the creation of over 2000 new jobs,
having a profound impact on the lives of thousands of Alabama families.
Should you pursue this arbitrary and subjective course of action, I implore you to
consider the implications these congressional hearings will have on the thousands of Americans
who stand to benefit from this new project in Mobile, Alabama.
Sincerely
Jim Folsom, Jr.
Lt. Governor

rmseek1234 ,
the company that the air force awarded the contact to is airbus, not norfolk-grummon.

glad to hear that alabama has no illegal immigrants and does not buy products produced in china.
tell me what a 4 bedroom house costs in your area, bet i can match the price in modesto or stockton.

i have no problem with alabama recieving jobs from a goverment contract.
what i do have a problem with is my tax dollars and security going to a french company. no matter how it has been sugar coated, the contract is with airbus and they will do all they can to keep the jobs in france.
maybe airbus found the right air force personnel to bribe.
should 30,000 jobs be lost to america because of corrupt air force and boeing personnel?

The comment about Yankees was meant to be sarcastic, as they seem to be the only ones complaining. In case you didn’t know-Norfolk-Grummond is AMERICAN based. If these people who are complaining about Alabama getting the contract, allow a bidin the first place if they wanted Boeing to have it? The time for all this was 3 years ago, when it first started-they should have put their chips on the table then and spelled out exactly what was expected. If they wanted all the parts to be American made, and not outsourced, they should have said so then.

How can one from California talk about outsourcing. You all have basically sold yourselves to China, not to mention the staggering number of illegal Mexicans that work there. Security, look at your own door, too.

One reason wages are lower in Alabama, is that our cost of living is not as appallingly high as in California, New York and Chicago. We can buy a 4000 square foot house, for what you all pay for a one bedroom apartment.

Foreign Suppliers to U.S. Military Programs
* There are numerous examples of transatlantic cooperation on vital
U.S. military programs. Foreign suppliers currently play essential
roles in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the VH-71 Presidential
Helicopter. In fact, on the C-27J Joint Cargo Aircraft program,
Boeing is responsible for producing the Alenia Aeronautica (Italy)
  aircraft in Jacksonville, Fla.
* No sensitive military technology will be exported to Europe. For
the KC-45A program, a commercial A330 jetliner will be assembled by
American workers in EADS’s facility in Mobile. The aircraft will
then undergo military conversion in an adjacent Northrop Grumman
facility. All of the KC-45A’s critical military technology will be
added by an American company, Northrop Grumman, in America, in
  Mobile Ala.

Foreign Content
* All modern jetliners are built from a global supplier base and the
two entrants in the KC-45A competition are no exception. The Boeing
tanker includes parts manufactured in Japan, United Kingdom, Canada
and Italy. The Northrop Grumman tanker includes parts built in the
United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and France.
* The Northrop Grumman KC-45A will include approximately 60 percent
U.S. content. It is America’s tanker.

Industrial Base
* The Northrop Grumman KC-45A tanker program will create a new
aerospace manufacturing corridor in the southeastern United States.
* The KC-45A program helps return competitiveness to the U.S.
  aerospace industry.

Jobs
* The Northrop Grumman KC-45A tanker program does not transfer any
jobs from the United States to France or any other foreign country.
* The KC-45A tanker will support more than 25,000 jobs in the United
  States.
* The KC-45A U.S. supplier base will include 230 companies in 49
  states.
* Assembly and militarization of the KC-45A tanker will take place in
Mobile, Ala., resulting in the in-sourcing of approximately 2,000
jobs from Europe to the United States.

asda,
i live in california and have nothing to do with boeing.
my concern is my tax dollars and national security.
i would like some documentation about boeing outsourcing the bulk of the 40 billion to italy.

the reason foreign companies flock to your area is the appalling low wages with little or no benefits. bmw now stands for budda motor works.

if you are really still stuck in the yankees and the south mentatilty you are doomed to some of the poorest education and poverty levels in america.
the civil war is over, the yankees are not coming, the french are!

And if these Yankees would like to apply for a job here, let me be the first to welcome you to our wonderful city. You may even learn some MANNERS while in the South! (Like how to lose gracefully-lol).

The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming! Good grief, do these people not consider Alabama part of the U.S.? Didn’t they whine when the ?BMW or Mercedes contract came to Alabama too? Do they not think that Alabamians have enough intelligence to do anything other than raise chickens and spit tobacco? Idiots!

And one other thing, since Boeing is so great and wonderful-why do so many of their planes crash? Isn’t it usually the Boeing’s that have been involved in the major crashes?

The fat cats are just upset that the gravy train left the station without them!
