If you're waiting to find out Mobile's future in Aerospace, the wait just got longer.According the Senator Richard Shelby's office, the Air Force will now make it's decision in the heated Tanker Competition on February 29, 2008. The 40 Billion dollar deal would be for an order of 179 tankers.
Northrop Grumman and EADS are going head-to-head with Boeing to build the next fleet of air refuelers to replace the currently used KC-135. In the Summer of 2005, EADS announced it would build tankers at Mobile's Brookley Field if they got the contract. That would bring more than 1-thousand direct jobs to our area and thousands more from supply companies.
The decision was originally expected before the end of the year. No word on why the decision has been delayed.
Governor Riley, along with four other southern governors, wrote a letter to President Bush about the competition. They are asking him to do everything he can to make sure the competition is a fair one. Click here to read the letter for yourself.
