Voters will decide next month whether to approve the City of Mobile's controversial annexation plan.

Late this afternoon, Judge Don Davis set the election for October 7th, the same day as the runoffs for last month's municipal elections.

Mayor Sam Jones wants to annex four areas including parts of Theodore/Tillmans Corner and Semmes. Opponents say the mayor is only after the tax base from the Wal-Mart and other businesses in those areas.

Only people who have lived within the areas to be annexed for at least three months will be allowed to vote.

The deadline to register to vote is Friday, September 26th.

Hi asda2.  Those 4,000 people don’t spend that much money to generate $10 Million in sales tax revenue.  It’s the entire communities that spend to generate this amount of tax revenue.  But, the problem is that Mobile has not included the entire communities in their annexation area.  Mobile doesn’t want all of the communities—they just want the commercial/retail business areas when the sales tax revenue is.  They’ve cut these other voters out and are not allowing them a voice in the annexation.

The only polling place for the Tillman’s Corner vote is in Theodore.  It is also the only address not listed as Mobile, AL.

Shouldn’t Wal-Mart on Mo-fat Rd. be a polling place? Everybody (almost) goes there and will be directly affected by this gross abuse of greed.

Is the monthly sewer bill going to be 80% of the water bill or what ? I mean after paying the connection fee.

There is a high ratio of renters in Mobile Terrace and they do not fully understand that the new expense the landlord will incur will be passed on to them in the form of increased rent.

BamaBob & Others—someone called about how much it is going to cost them to hook up to City sewer if the annexation is approved in Semmes.  Guess how much the estimate was for their home?  Over $3000!

There’s alot of older homes on those streets who are on septic tanks.  I can imagine that these people are definitely going to vote against annexation expecially when they find out that they will have to go on city water (if they are not on it already) and on city sewer.

BamaBob - it’s called gerrymandering people out of voting and also Lasso-ing to get the big sales tax revenue.  This should be illegal.  It is dishonest.
