A former Mobile County Public School board member asked the school system to take a hard look at the annexation vote.
Lonnie Parsons told school board members Tuesday that if approved, the school system could lose millions of dollars.
He said the half-cent sales tax will be taken away and that could possibly mean employee layoffs and student program cuts.
He said the school system should get something in writing from the city and county with a guarantee that money will still go to the schools.
Parsons said his concern is not about annexation but the students.
"It's not about annexation. It's about the schools right now to me. It's strictly about the kids of the city and county. Annexation is not an issue with me at all. I think Mobile needs to be strong. I think the county needs to be strong but not at the expense of children," said former Mobile County Public School Board member Lonnie Parsons.
A city spokesperson told News Five that the cost is speculative and the city just doesn't know how much the annexation will affect the school system....if at all.
