Mississippi's hockey team has a new name and it's raising a few eyebrows.

The Southern Professional Hockey League had a name contest and the winner is... Mississippi Surge.

Some people who live along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast feel the name is a little insensitive but the coach in Biloxi says the name isn't about storm surge.
Coach and General Manager Steffon Walby says the name represents a high voltage hockey team with a surge of electricity. "We are talking about in the electrical power surge sense of the word. We wanted to take all offensive parts of out the name the surge because we knew what it did to the area. To be honest with you, the most requested name was Hurricanes! We didn't want to do that one not only because the Carolina Hurricanes are a hockey team but we didn't feel that represented the coast."

Some of the other names tossed out of the contest were Storm Surge, Camille's and Kats.

The Mississippi Surge starts its season in October. If you want more info about the new team, here's their website. Mississippi Surge Website

Yeah I remember one year for spring break I was on the beach and sat on one of those chairs because I stepped on something that cut my foot and all I remember hearing was, “Hey you have to pay to sit there!,”. Haven’t been there since hurricane Ivan so I do not know what it looks like now. As for the name of the team. I do not see a huge problem with it.

Goneisland, sounds like you have been to many games living up north for so many years.  The way you comment about it, it might be safe to say that a neuro –proctologist might have been able to remove the puck before any brain damage was permanent. Good luck on your recovery.  I can only think of one thing the Mississippi coast needs more than a hockey team, another casino. A storm surge will come again and wash them off the beach. Hopefully next time the casinos and this trash sport will not come back. Just think about the Ms coast, the days spent on the peaceful beach with all its scenic beauty, but now all you see is concrete casinos and parking lots and drunks and fighting on ice? It is just as bad at Gulf Shores. Who thinks of sea oats and sand dunes now, when you say “Gulf Shores”?  Nothing but concrete parking lots, houses, condos and chairs for rent. You can’t see the beach for them. Stay home and up north Yankee and take your concrete and hockey pucks.

ickthus you are wrong about Nashville.  I have lived all over the USA and Canada, including many parts of the Deep South, including 15 years in Nashville.  People from all the surrounding Davidson County counties come to see the Nashville Predators—many of them self-proclaimed “rednecks”.

You are one spoiled angry person - shows by the avatar you use.

Goneisland .you presume too much. I have been to a game and I’m glad it was a free ticket. It is much like that euro trash sport but on ice with sticks and a lot more fighting. You kanucks and schmucks can keep it.  Lacrosse might be a different story. The one game I was going to see was rained out. If you think there are any redneck country boys in Nashville you are out of touch. Nashville is nothing but a bunch of citified country star want-a-bee’s form all over the world. Not enough rednecks inside the city limits to fill the grand ole opry.

ickthus: The sport went over well in Nashville TN which as you should know is part of the South.  They don’t have “yankee snowbirds” there like down here.

When the local TN rednecks found out how exciting hockey was and the amount of fights that broke out on the ice, they were in love with the sport…and supported it and got a pro team there.

so I suggest since you have obviously not been to a hockey game in your life, you go to one to find out how exciting it is.

Of course, the game is faster than SEC football so I doubt you could keep up with all the hockey action, as it is a fast and furious unlike football is is slow and laborious.

how about “blow hards” who wants that ice trash sport down here anyway. yankee snow birds.

Lighten up yourself pacerpadre no one is trying to stir anything up.  It is hard to come up with a good hockey team name nowadays since all the good ones are taken.  The last major team I think named was the Nashville Predators (they had been the Nashville Knights as a minor team).

Give me a break! What about already taken names like Hurricanes, Braves, and Indians? Where’s the controversy over those names? How bout we name all of our sports teams the “Cute Fuzzy Wuzzy Never-Gonna-Hurt-Nobody Koala Bears?”

Lighten up people. And stop trying to stir up controversy.

sudbury fan are you from sudbury ontario?

If I get a chance I will go see the Surge.  After all hockey is hockey.  Maybe a fight will break out on the ice!

Love it.  I heard WLOX use the word resurgent and I think that pretty much sums it up.
