RIDGELAND, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's first sales-tax holiday on clothing takes place this week, but officials are already talking about proposals to expand the temporary exemptions to include back-to-school and hurricane preparedness supplies.

Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and state Sen. Walter Michel held a news
conference Tuesday to remind shoppers and retailers about the
tax-free holiday on Friday and Saturday. The 7 percent sales tax
will not be charged on most clothing priced under $100.

Michel first proposed the idea nearly a decade ago. He and
Bryant said lawmakers will likely be asked next year to amend the
law to include school supplies, as well as flashlights, batteries
and other items needed during a hurricane. Michel said Louisiana
already has a tax holiday for those supplies.
