JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - It would be more difficult to file civil
lawsuits in some criminal cases under a bill passed Friday in the
Mississippi Senate.
The bill would require lawmakers to insert provisions into new
laws stating a person has the right to sue.
Opponents of the bill say it essentially would take away the
right of victims to file suit against people or companies that hurt
them.
But Senate Judiciary A Chairman Joey Fillingane contends that
the ability to file suit should be stated with the adoption of any
new laws.
The bill would only affect laws enacted after this July 1.
The bill passed 24-23. It now heads to the House for
consideration.
----
The bill is Senate Bill 2294.
