HONOLULU (AP) - The Navy is getting ready to try again to free a
warship that ran aground off the coast of Hawaii last week.
About 800 tons of water and 40 tons of anchors and anchor chains
will be unloaded from the USS Port Royal.
The hope is that a lighter load will make it easier for a
collection of tug boats to yank the Port Royal loose.
Several attempts have thus far failed, and if this one does too,
then the Navy plans to unload fuel from the ship. If that still
doesn't work, then the Navy might dredge a channel behind the
vessel so it can be pulled back out.
The boat is lodged just off the Honolulu airport, in clear view
of many. No one on board was injured when it ran aground, and it
hasn't been leaking fuel or anything else.

$3 million dollars of electronic navigational equipment…

$1 million dollars worth of naval officers put through school…

grounding a $3 billion dollar destroyer…..Priceless

This has got to look great on your Captains License! I remember the first time I ran a shrimp boat aground. Took 4 hours to get a tow off the bar, however we didn’t even own a Fathometer. This is a multi-million dollar vessel with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of electronics, I wonder what his excuse was. Mine was sleep deprivation! I guess we all make mistakes, even the Navy!
