LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - Pursuing allegations of a criminal civil
rights violation or filing a civil lawsuit are two options the
Mississippi NAACP will consider in the shooting death of a high
school football star.
A grand jury concluded that Billey Joe Johnson Jr. accidentally
caused his own death by grabbing the barrel of a hunting gun after
a George County deputy sheriff stop him for a traffic violation in
Dec. 8.
The NAACP says it will discuss further action with Johnson's
family, claiming the organization has additional evidence.
Johnson's father has refused to discuss what the next step might
be. But he says he's not happy with the results of the
investigation.

This young man is no longer with us and what a terrible loss. My heart weeps for the family. All these organizations and law firms keep folks stirred up no matter what the evidence or the truth. I cannot believe this law enforcement officer, out of the wild blue, just up and shot to death, this young man for no reason.

zero

Jerome Carter, a Mobile attorney representing the family of Billey Joe Johnson, who works for The Cochran Firm in Mobile, said any information his law firm’s investigators uncover would be shared with Jackson County D.A. office.  I have not heard a word out of them or if they are still retained by the Johnson’s. The naacp claiming the organization has additional evidence. I was thinking with holding evidence in a Grand Jury investigation was called obstruction of justice?

In Ms ,it is not againt the law to have a loaded gun in your car as it is part of your home. in most states you can carry “long” guns as you wish coming and going to sporting activities. It was said by his dad he was going hunting that morning. I have been stopped a few times over the years with my side arm and never disarmed. show them my permit ,told them where it was and they said don’t go near it and soon sent me on my way.I don’t think we will ever know why he got out of the truck and was pulling the gun out. i have hunted and shot competition sports all my life. you can’t have a shotgun blast at close range without telling you a fairly clear picture from the forensics. should be ez to prove or disprove and the time to do that was at the Grand Jury. The naacp need to shut up or put up. The lawsuit that needs to be file is againt the naacp for slander, insighting civil unrest. Take the money and do something at the high school in his name.

Maybe the family believes that if their son grabbed the gun to place it in view while the officer was following through with calling in the stop, the officer was somehow responsible for not disarming the kid initially? Did the officer tell Mr. Johnson to pull the gun out? Beats me! Does anyone know what transpired?

I do wonder how parents allowed their son to carry a firearm that would be taken to school property? Was he in the habit of returning firearms after early morning hunting and prior to driving to school? I know it’s a small town and people are lax about these things but it’s a state law that firearms are not allowed on campus or within a set distance from campus.

Most likely, we are not in the know about all the details of the stop. If the family is keeping some of the circumstances secret are the Law Enforcement agencies holding out on the media?

if they had more evidence they should have presented it to the grand jury. the naacp should be investigated.

More nonsense by the NAACP. They can’t just accept it was an accident. Perhaps every car accident and construction mishap will now be a racial issue. This country has gone to pot when organizations like the NAACP and ACLU can stir up trouble just to justify their existance. Sadly a career and reputation of a Law Enforcemant Officer is collateral damage in their quest to bolster their agendas. The Officer should file a libel suit and deafamtion of character suit against the NAACP and anyone that suggest he was at fault in this kids death.

somebody needs to file a lawsuit againts the naacp. what proof do they have that it is anything other than what it said to be? He was a good kid and was going to the NFL someday. I think thats a given, but lots of good NFL players shoot themself[ Plexico ] as well everyday people. Show me some proof or forensic evidence other than emotional grief and disbelief. Everyone who thinks the cop shot this kid needs to stand outside a truck reach in with your left hand and grab a loaded shotgun by the barrel, drag it out while looking back behind the truck, to see if anyone can see you. You will have the answers your looking for. A gunshot wound, left to right at an upward angle behind the left ear. Just like the report states. I can understand family and friends not being able to find answers to this young man death even if a dash camera had been in the car, because denial is part of the grieving process.

Very foolish person to be holding a gun during a traffic stop. If the deputy had seen him holding the gun and felt threatened, he could have shout to disable him. But, in this case he shot himself!
