Anytime anyone gets behind the wheel, lives are put at risk. But Mississippi State Representative Billy Broomfield believes drivers using cell phones are also to blame.
Broomfield is proposing a statewide ban on cell phone usage. If the bill passes it wouldn't ban cell phone use completely, drivers would be required to use a hands free device.
"The ultimate goal is to give the authorities the opportunity and options of stopping you and reminding you that you're not complying with the law. If you can save one life and I think we will save quite a few with this law than it's worth it," Said Broomfield.
The bill will be presented during the next Mississippi legislative session in January.

People multi task all the time while driving. Eating a burger, smoking, changing a radio station etc. This is the type of law, if passed, will get many people ticketed that are not even using a phone. How so? If your involved in an accident and the officer see’s you have a cell phone then it will be assumed that you caused the accident and you will be cited as such. Be careful about the freedoms you give up with laws like these. It only opens up an Pandora’s box of problems for you in the future because people do not think.

Quite frankly, there is no difference between talking on a cell phone and talking to a passenger in your car while smoking a cigarette or changing the radio station.

I hope they do ban them! they need to in every state! i cant stand when someone is texting & driving! if im riding w/ someone who thinks they have to text right then i grab their phone & do it for them! bcuz my life is worth more than a lol text!

Goo question. Have accident stats risen since more people have had access to more phones with more features?

What about driving while smoking, eating fast food, reaching back to the back seat to swat your kid, changing the radio station, picking up something off the floorboard, or getting distracted for ANY reason.  Wow, law enforcement is about to get much broader and they truly will “Take Back our Highways” when we all can’t afford to drive on them any longer.  By the way, who are they “Taking Back our Highways” from?  Aren’t we the ones paying for them to begin with?
