JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Citing the economic downturn, the
Mississippi House has voted to sell Republican Gov. Haley Barbour's
jet, possibly on eBay.
House Appropriations Chairman Johnny Stringer said the plane is
valued at $3.7 million and cost nearly $2,000 an hour to use.
Stringer said selling the jet would be another source of revenue
for Mississippi, which has had to make budget cuts amid the
national recession. If the jet is sold, the governor and other
state officials would still have three other taxpayer-funded planes
to use.
Under the bill, the jet could be sold by competitive bids,
public auction or on eBay.
The bill passed 77-42.
----
The bill is House Bill 1065.
