BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department ofTransportation is assessing the structural integrity of the damaged
Popp's Ferry Bridge in Biloxi.
The heavily traveled drawbridge on Biloxi's Back Bay was closed
last week after a barge accident. Two 90-foot sections of the
bridge were destroyed along with eight pylons.
MDOT engineers say parts of the bridge that didn't collapse from
the barge strike didn't escape unscathed.
On Wednesday, inspectors began examining the area of the bridge
that was hit and divers searched for any damage below the surface
using visual inspection and sonar.
Engineer Kelly Castleberry says debris removal is on hold until
the structural inspection is complete.
