Dr. Hassell is seeing an unusual number of strep pharyngitis cases. He is also treating allergies and bronchitis.
While strep throat constitutes only a small percentage of sore throats, it is one of the most serious. Viral sore throats often are associated with other symptoms such as runny nose, cough, congestion, nausea, and diarrhea. But often strep throat has few or no other symptons other than bad sore throat, higher fever, and sometimes upper abdominal pain. The throat is often very red with white or gray exudates on the back of the red throat, and there may be tender enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Strep throat may lead to rheumatic fever and, rarely, serious kidney problems. So these “bad sore throats” with fever and perhaps upper abdominal pain should be seen by a physician within the first few days of the illness in order to receive prescribed treatment.
