NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A new study says men shouldn't look toVitamins C and E for help preventing heart disease.
It's one of the largest and longest studies of the supplements
taken by millions of Americans.
Vitamin E even appeared to raise the risk of bleeding strokes, a
danger seen in at least one earlier study.
Some research suggests vitamin C may aid cancer, though not
fight it.
The results were discussed at an American Heart Association
conference in New Orleans. Results also were published online by
the Journal of the American Medical Association.
About 12 percent of Americans take the supplements despite
growing evidence that these antioxidants do not prevent heart
disease and may even be harmful.
Experts say the results are so clear that they would be unlikely
if the study were done in women, minorities, or with different
formulations of the vitamins.
