AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - An Auburn man who put two of his Iron Bowl
tickets up for sale will match the $750 he received and donate the
money to the American Cancer Society as a tribute to his childhood
friend who died of lung cancer.
Ronnie Hubbard, who is 43, and his friend Chris McCarthy, who
was also 43, planned to sit beside each other at the Auburn-Alabama
game in Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday. But McCarthy succumbed to
lung cancer earlier this year.
Hubbard and McCarthy met in kindergarten and attended Auburn
University together.
But they never got to attend an Iron Bowl game together.
Hubbard said McCarthy's lung cancer diagnosis in 2006 was a
surprise to everyone because he didn't have a family history of the
illness, never smoked and had been cycling to stay in shape.
McCarthy was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Peachtree City, Georgia, and faith always played an important role
in his life.
Hubbard said McCarthy was always positive and accepted whatever
happened.
