Smoking is banned at the 14 state-owned university campuses --
even outdoors.
Students got word in an email the day before the ban took effect
last week.
Chancellor John Cavanaugh says he interprets a new state law
forbidding smoking in most workplaces and public spaces to extend
beyond buildings. He says in his view it includes all campus
grounds, such as courtyards, parking lots and athletic fields,
because some classes occasionally meet outside, and schools also
hold events and receptions outdoors.
Students on three campuses already have protested, risking fines
or other disciplinary action by lighting up. There's talk of a
coordinated statewide demonstration later this week.
