HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The news came with virtually no warning,
stunning college students across Pennsylvania.
Smoking is banned at the 14 state-owned university campuses --
even outdoors.
Students got word in an email the day before the ban took effect
last week.
Chancellor John Cavanaugh says he interprets a new state law
forbidding smoking in most workplaces and public spaces to extend
beyond buildings. He says in his view it includes all campus
grounds, such as courtyards, parking lots and athletic fields,
because some classes occasionally meet outside, and schools also
hold events and receptions outdoors.
Students on three campuses already have protested, risking fines
or other disciplinary action by lighting up. There's talk of a
coordinated statewide demonstration later this week.

Well I did not smoke until I was 38.  There was so much hype I wanted to see what it was all about.  However, when I didn’t smoke I didn’t hate on smokers.  Why is it in the 70’s when it was labeled Kool noone said anything.  Now that the label has changed to not Kool we have haters popping out of the woodwork.  Oh please inquiring mind, if all you can see is cigarette butts at an intersection, look closer.  Bottles, paper, vagrants, labels, soda cans, I am going to run out space here butt you get my point. Get over it.  Go study the ozone layer it is doing more damage to you a whiff of smoke.

oh please xsmoker, if you are offended by smokers get over it. you were one of those violating those 10 people at one time. you decided to quit on your own. when those 10 people decide to quit they will have the same freedom to do so just as you did.

Yes, not according to the letter of the law but to a non-smoker it is the same problem. One smoker violating the rights of 10 non-smokers. It is my belief with regard to individual rights that all individuals have a right to do as they may, within the confines of the law, so long as they do not violate the rights of other individuals. It is my observation, being an ex-smoker that most smokers do not abide by this basic premise of freedom.

LITTERING AND SMOKING ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

inquiring mind, there is nothing worse than a xsmoker. who made you smoke? outside i do not see anyway to get harmed by 2nd hand smoke. if you can smell those butts you have your nose to close. i let my employees smoke outside. inside well that is a different story. if you see those butts on the side of the road you have better eyesight than me. i am to busy watching traffic.

I’m not trying to convince anybody to stop smoking, or trying to live your life whatever you meant by that. Go right ahead. My only point is that its rude to make other people breath smoke and smell stale burnt cigarettes buts everywhere. Look at the left turn lane at Airport and University. At any one time there are hundreds of buts in the road. No one can say thats their right.

never happen inquiring mind. smokers pay to much in taxes. keep dreaming. you are trying to live other peoples lives for them. they will not stop with smoking bans.

We do treat smokers like royals in this country, we voted you out!

smoking in a office is wrong, but smoking in the outdoors is not. this law is going to far. people who smoke pay enough taxes when they buy a pack of cigarettes they should be treated like royals. all these people worrying about outside smoke would do better to worry about a plane flying over or exaust fumes from automobiles.

It is pretty sad that Chancellor John Cavanaugh said he interprets the law to extend beyond buildings at educational facilities to include all campus grounds, such as courtyards, parking lots and athletic fields.

The law, Senate Bill 246, is known as the “Clean Indoor Air Act”. This act does not address clean air, it only prohibits smoking indoors.

This law is an affront to private property rights, and basic freedom

If the Chancellor cannot read a simple law, what does that say for the education system. To “interpret” a law to fit personal preferences is a travesty.

These students make me proud to know there are still some critical thinkers among us. The populace has been indoctrinated for 30 years that there is harm in a whiff of smoke.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said,“I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is
