A mother saved the life of her baby girl this week. She dropped her off at a secret safe place.
Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson says the baby is the 16th child saved in the Secret Safe Place for Newborns program.
The baby weighs eight pounds. The mother dropped her off at USA Children's and Women's.
Under the program, a mother can drop off her newborn to any area emergency room with no questions asked.
The mother won't be prosecuted as long as the baby is less than three days old and is taken to the hospital unharmed. The prgram was started back in 1998. It is now implemented in 46 other states.
The health department says the baby is already being lined up with potential parents wanting to adopt her.

I’m not giving her grief for doing it just the procedures. It seems to be a helpful thing if both the mother and father agree on it but no questions asked seems a bit too relaxed. The mother’s and father’s name should be required in case there is a medical need of the information in the baby’s future. I’m in agreement with no threat of charges of any kind for doing so. It would probably be good to get both parents to do this also to maybe prevent any legal hassles later on for the ones adopting the child. It’s a extremely hard thing to go through after raising a child for the first 3 or 4 years and then have the birth parents to take the baby back. But I’d do it again for the baby’s sake.

Get off her back, she didn’t have an abortion, which would have been totally legal.  She probably thought in her mind she could take care of her and then realized she could not.  I don’t know the circumstances but maybe if she had more family support it would not have turned out this way.  But, she did care enough not to throw the little darling in the dumpster or flush her down the toilet. Maybe this was Gods will. Ther perhaps will be a family that really emotionally needed a child that will have an opportunity to adopt her..

I don’t know about the title, makes her sound like a hero for abandoning her child. I think it’s a little easier than it should be. What if she changes her mind in 30 days, can she just walk back in and pick up the child?

I would think there would be a checks and balances-like if a child was reported missing, they would question if it belonged to this particular person. All I can say though is thank goodness she dropped it of, instead of killing it, or leaving it abandoned somewhere. At least now, she has a chance at a life with someone who is willing and able to care for her.

I do wonder though, why she didn’t consider adoption to begin with, or discuss it with hospital staff before discharge-assuming she delivered at a hospital. I think the time limit needs to be re-evaluated. A normal delivery stay is 2 days, 3-4 for a C-section. How many of these mothers go home, and a week or two later find they can’t cope?

Isn’t this a little Questionable if you don’t know if it was the mother that dropped it off. I’m all for it if you know the mother is the one leaving the baby.
