SAN ANTONIO (AP) - It's not just women who are being encouragedto be tested for genes that raise the risk of breast cancer.
New research indicates that male relatives of women with such
genes may also carry them, and may face greater odds of developing
male breast cancer -- along with prostate, pancreatic and skin
cancer.
A researcher at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia says
the genes can be inherited from the father's side of the family.
Dr. Mary Daly saw breast cancer in several male patients who
didn't know they were at risk. She's now trying to convince more
fathers, sons and brothers of women with the genes to get tested.
But she says few of them want to.
Her study was presented today at a conference in Texas.
Breast cancer is the most common major cancer in American women.
But more than 2,000 cases of it in men are expected in the U.S.
this year.
