TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A bill that supporters hope will lead
insurers to cover most costs for diagnosis and treatment of autism
is headed to the governor. It was the Legislature's last act before
its session ended.
Gov. Charlie Crist is expected to sign it the sign the bill (SB 2654).
The legislation came down to a contest between House and Senate
proposals, with the Senate prevailing.
House leaders had hoped to pass a measure that would have
required insurance companies to cover treatments for a range of
children's developmental disabilities, including Down Syndrome and
spina bifida. But the Senate said they couldn't go along with the
House plan because it wasn't clear how much the broader plan would
cost taxpayers or how much it would raise the cost of private
insurance.
