When someone is diagnosed with cancer their life changes. But the patient is only one of the people affected by cancer. Life also changes for family members who help the patient get through the experience. Lillian Hughes has been living with cancer for more than ten years, but she's not the patient in the house. First her father Charlie Hughes was diagnosed with prostate cancer and then doctors said her mother Christine Hughes had multimyelyoma.
"To take care of someone you have to take yourself out. You can't get caught up in what you're not getting," said Lillian Hughes.
Her father lost his battle with cancer eight years ago, so she spends most of her time taking care of mother.
"Knowing if I drop or I give up...I wouldn't want her to see me be in positions that I'm tired and I don't want to feel like i'm tired of taking care of her," said Hughes.
How does she stay focused?
"I find my support from God. I'm a praying woman. I have a great deal of faith. I believe with dealing with myeloma this long, I just know that God is just using her to show people that just because you've been diagnosed with something it shows that you can keep going," said Hughes.

peta, now that is your first mistake. i went to the peta website during michael vick. peta is a human hate group. turned more people off than the experiments. if you have only adopted 3 pets you have some catching up to do. it makes me angry for the animals because instead of helping them groups like peta hurt them more. go to the source of these experiments where do they get the animals from. who are the drug companies using them. quit slamming humans for wanting to live. its not about your anger its about the lives saved and the humane treatment of animals.

The “public” is involved. Have you heard of PETA, with over one million members, In Defense of Animals, Mercy for Animals, Primate Freedom - there are active organizations who are making a difference. I am member of local rescue groups, and donate reg., leave leaflets everywhere, and we have 2 dogs and one cat (for which we provide vet care, excellent environment and much love - and receive more love than words could say. Many of us are working for a new, larger shelter that will be a true SHELTER, not a killing facility. There are private organizations in our area, and as a volunteer and supporter, the work is never done. Our officials need to know that we want the animals of our community truly cared for, the abandoned, neglected and sick that people dump on the side of the road. I wish I could take in more and will in future. so I share my finances with organizations making a difference. It is our goal to expose to the public every area of animal cruelty. Witness, Speak and Demand!

rosepetal is right thousand of animals are dieing every day because noone wants them. If these animal can benefit man by research, cruel yes, but like you said, If my child and it’s already out there of course I will use it even if they want to use me as the one to try it on. I don’t know the answer, given a choice between a child and an animal, sorry the child wins. Before you condemn Christians ask God for help. He is able to help when there is no other help.

first of all my prayers go out to this family.

JukeZZ, i can believe it about the money. but what are you suggesting as a new means of research. you can call it sage advice but inless you get the public involved you are spinning your wheels. how many strays have you taken in?

Barefoot Tangle: Well, of course I’d use the most up to date treatment, since its already done, but there are medical alternatives in research now and they are not used by Amer Cancer Society. There are few, pitiful laws of animal care for these animals. They are victims. Condemned without a choice. I don’t want animals used for my benefit if it brings this extent of suffering. They are not ours to use. My opinion, of course. Its virtually impossible to use any products, consume food, etc. in our modern world, without an animal having suffered somewhere along the line. It needs to stop. If my “loved one” is an adult, then they can make the choice of what medical marvel to use if they are ill.

Rosepetal, thanks for the sage advice. I will not put people first though, that is why this evil practice if condoned and accepted…for people’s benefit. I do go to the sources, and to elected officials, but no one cares. It is huge business - with huge profits, at animal’s expense. We won’t give up though. We are the animal’s only voice, but there are millions and growing of compassionate human beings who strive to include animals in our nation and world’s family of deserving beings who should be allowed to live free from terror, pain and exploitation by human hand. Thanks again for well spoken advice.

jukezz, not against what you say or for what you say, my only answer is the cure is every man, woman and child that lives. My question: If someone you love more then life had cancer would you not let them receive treatment that would save their life knowing how that treatment (cure) was developed? This is an honest question, not trying to put you on the spot, but it was the first thing that came to my mind after reading all this. Thank you. The BFA

JukeZZ , first always put people first. then find another way. i do not have the answer but you have a heart for the animals. where do they get these animals go to the source. start a no kill refuge for the animals. they could get some from the shelters. you will not save all but you can save some. do not make it so people will turn from fear of seeing something. paint the same picture in a more subtle way. get people involved. i know its hard but use your head not rage.

Rosepetal, No I don’t want to see another heartbreaking scene that has nothing to do with advances of cancer cure by using animals as “models” for torture, and invasive, atrocious experiments. Animal advocates have tried to be “nice” while even more animals are bred, sold and condemned to unspeakable agony then discarded like trash. I admit, I am angry, and anyone who witnesses the horrendous pain experienced by living being creatures in laboratories, whose only crime is being the most vulnerable among us, and is NOT affected, and can remain calm, turn away, is incomprehensible to me and a growing number of people who know the facts. I apologize if I have offended anyone, but it is more than offensive to see the extent of institutional animal cruelty that exists, with more on the horizon. Amer Cancer Soc thrives on the suffering of animals, and still….wheres the cure?
