The heat index hit triple digits Monday prompting the Mobile County Health Department to issue a warning. Health officials want you to be careful out there. They're concerned about heat exhaustion, heat stroke, even death, "everyone needs to take precaution, but, especially the elderly, the very young, and of course people that have underlying health conditions such as heart problems or that kind of thing," said public health nurse, Cheryl Lahrs. There are some simple things the Health Department recommends you do to protect yourself or your loved ones from heat-related illness: stay hydrated, and stay away from drinks with caffeine, alcohol or lots of sugar. If your doctor limits your fluid intake, check to see how much you should drink. Stay inside where there's air conditioning. If you do have to get out, the best time is in the early morning or late afternoon. And, never leave your pets or anyone inside a closed car.
