In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Mobile County Health Department is teaming up with three local Wal-Mart stores to offer free clinical breast examinations.

Citing a report from the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Bernard Eichold, Health Officer, says breast cancer is the most common cancer in women aside from skin cancer. The report, he says, predicts there will be 178,480 new cases of breast cancer in women in the United States this year. Of these, an estimated 40,460 will die from the disease.

“Early detection is critical to successfully treating breast cancer,” Dr. Eichold says. “We are encouraging women to take advantage of the free breast examinations the Health Department is offering at three Wal-Mart stores this month.”

On Oct. 11, the Health Department’s Wellness Express will bring nurse practitioners to the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 1095 Industrial Pkwy. in Saraland. They will provide free clinical breast examinations from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. for women age 40 or older and for women under 40 if they are experiencing breast problems. Women in the age range of 50 to 64 years who have no medical insurance or are underinsured will receive a voucher for a free mammogram.

The Wellness Express will offer the same services from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 5245 Service Rd. S. in Tillman’s Corner and on Oct. 25 at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 7855 Moffett Rd. in Semmes.
