The same computer technology used to inspect computer circuit boards is now helping experts get a better view into what causes birth defects.Since the early 1980's, fetal ultrasound technology has been considered the gold standard for detecting birth defects such as spina bifida or cleft lips.
Researchers are taking the technology a step further with one of the newest imaging tools is called the Micro C.T. The technology lets researchers see images in 3-D and as tiny as one tenth the width of a human hair.
"By studying those birth defects in animals, you can very well clearly study them in humans, or you can correlate them with the human birth defects," said Biomedical Engineer Suresh Prajapati.
The goal of the research is to better understand birth defects, how to prevent them and how to treat them.
Doctors hope to one day treat or completely reverse birth defects before a baby is even born.
