BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Officials have announced that Gulf CoastMedical Center is closing January first.
Hospital officials cited the financial drain suffered by a
failure of patient numbers to rebound after Hurricane Katrina.
The decision was announced yesterday (Thursday) and follows the
emergency room's closing in early October.
Chief Executive Officer Brenda Whitwell says the inpatient load
fell 40 percent after the storm. She would not comment on the exact
financial loss.
Whitwell says the plan is to move north, in tune with the
population shift. She gave no details on where the new hospital
will be built, only that the project will take up to five years.
There are 359 employees.
