Florida are treating students who may have been in contact with a
sorority resident believed to have bacterial meningitis.
USF spokesman Ken Gullette says the student is in "grave
condition" and on life support in the hospital. Her family has
asked for privacy.
Gullette says the student did not attend classes late last week,
when she would have been most contagious. Over the weekend, dozens
of students who had direct contact with her were treated with a
strong antibiotic.
Bacterial meningitis is a potentially fatal infection that
strikes about 3,000 Americans each year. It's transmitted via
respiratory secretions and by direct contact with an infected
person.
