BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's suicide rate has climbed toits highest level since 2000 and appears to remain above the
national average.
An Alabama Department of Public Health study says the state has
surpassed the national suicide rate since 1990. Public health
officials say rural geography and a high use of firearms in the
deaths could be factors, but there are no definitive answers.
The recently released statistics show the state's suicide rate
was 12.5 per 100,000 people in 2006. The study says national rates
for 2005 and 2006 aren't available, but the country has maintained
a rate near or below 11 suicides per 100,000 for several years.
The latest Alabama report found that 70 percent of the 573
suicides in 2006 involved firearms, higher than the national
percentage of 55.

Why should we be surprised? The median income for families in Alabama in 2006 was $38,160. There are 45 states with higher median income. The other four lowest states in order are West Virginia, $38,029.00 Louisiana $37,472.00 Arkansas $37,456.00, and Mississippi $34,343. We are being taxed to death. Many of us have still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina. The United States Senators believe we live in a foreign country. Gas prices are soaring. Quite a few Alabamians have been injuring or killing their children. Children are being molested by adults that they should be able to trust. More people are turning to prostitution and drugs to either escape from their problems or to earn money. Families are having a hard time feeding their children. People can’t afford health care so they either suffer, die from the ailment, or commit suicide. We are getting fat eating what we can afford instead of what is healthy. Have a nice day everyone, enjoy this wonderful state!
