How much would you pay for a MoonPie? How about 9-grand? That's exactly how much Mobile City Councilman, Fred Richardson, is spending in taxpayer money from his discretionary fund to build an electronic MoonPie that will be dropped for the City's annual New Year's Eve celebration. Richardson says it's an investment that will make the city at least 200-grand. We asked if 9-thousand for an electric MoonPie is a good use of taxpayer dollars, " Its what you're getting back in return, its not what your spending," said Richardson. But feelings are mixed in his district, "if we could offer a little money or a little assistance we could get somebody around here to cleanup the city and we can get other things that's more necessary that could be done besides electric MoonPie falling from the, you know, from the sky," said District 1 neighbor, Marjorie Kenny Jones. Another neighbor likes the idea, " if you put the money to something else then it might not accumulate any return funds, so, I think it's a good idea," said Roy Dock. Richardson says the 9-grand also pays for fireworks and a MoonPie float. And, there will be a freebie at this year's party, Richardson says Chattanooga Bakery will bring the world's largest MoonPie and thousands of smaller MoonPies that you can take home to eat.

This is all about the city of Mobile’s bank account.  The mayor and city council are not interested in helping anybody with city money if they won’t get tons of money in return.  They do not have any interest in helping the Food Bank, the homeless, or even the citizens in Mobile and this is quite evident in how they are spending the so-called discretionary funds.  They spend this money as they wish.  That is why Fred Richardson sneaked and bought the moon-pie without the tax-payers knowing.  He did not want anyone telling him that he could not do it. The city will not be able to reap the windfall $200k without spending at least that much for publicity.

I just wanted to say how sickening it is, that with the Bay Area Food Bank running out of food, and the hundreds of children that still need adopting from the angel tree, that this man is being allowed to spend $9,000 on a giant moon pie! If this isnt misappropriation of funds I don’t know what is! Its because of people like him that our nation is in the shape that its in.  Thats our tax money, yet we the people have no say in how its spent.  This man should be fired!!!! May God Help Us All

Let’s hope David Thomas is not down there trying to run over all the moonpies and the Spanking Judge is not there greeting all the tourist that will be pouring into the city.

He’s thinking we will make national news with that moon pie and you will have reporters from all over the world coming to Mobile to see how much more redneck and/or stupid can Alabama get. I’m proud to be from Alabama, but I wish some of these idiots would leave.

I think he may have been trying to outdo the town who has Barack Obama Day.

Hmmmm…now there’s an idea. Let’s shut the city down on the 31st of December every year to celebrate Moon Pie Day that will be January 1st of every year.  Every employer in Mobile will have to pay their employees for the day off.
