NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Progress is being made in the Gulf Coast'srecovery from Hurricane Katrina, but plenty of work remains.
That's the assessment of members of a delegation of
congressional Democrats in the region to gauge progress since the
August 2005 storm and hear from officials and residents about what
needs remain.
House Majority Whip James Clyburn cited a list of recent aid,
including billions of dollars for a homeowner aid program and levee
improvements, and said the Democratic-led Congress has kept its
promise to help the region and to keep a focus on rebuilding.
He called on President Bush to extend from three years to 30 the
time the state will have to pay for its $1.8 billion share of levee
work.
