The State Health Department says 8 cases of West Nile Virus have been reported so far this year in Alabama. Two cases recently surfaced in Montgomery County. State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson, said West Nile infections have been documented in Baldwin, Chambers, Jefferson, Madison, Marshall and Mobile counties.
No cases of West Nile were reported last year in the state. But in 2005, Alabama recorded 19 cases.
The virus is usually transmitted by a mosquito bite. Symptoms include an abrupt onset of headaches, fever, nausea, a stiff neck, achiness and fatigue.
Williamson said the bulk of West Nile cases usually occur between August and October.
