A University of West Florida co-ed is recovering after being attacked on campus. She is going to be fine and campus police say there is no evidence of a sexual assault but the crime has students on edge.
Around almost every corner on campus a banner hangs reminding students to "Stay Safe-Stay Together".
"We'd like people to walk together and when people are exercising exercise together," says UWF Police Chief John Warren.
News of an attack on campus has students on edge.
Between 9 and 9:45 Tuesday night the victim says she was jogging by the baseball field when someone came up behind her, hit her on the head and drug her into the woods.
"Unfortunately she did not see the person she believes it was a male because of the strength and we believe that's probably right there are a few leads that we are working on based on what was at the scene," says Warren.
Crime alerts were e-mailed to students. "You don't think it's going to happen here and it's like right down the street from where I stay in my apartment so it's like whoa," says student Diane Abel.
Chief Warren says they are hopeful they will catch the attacker, "There are some things at the scene that only the victim and the suspect will know we're working on that."
Students like Jennifer Abel say they aren't taking any chances. "Guys if they want to overpower you they will no matter how strong the girl is so we don't like to take the chance."
Campus police recommend exercising with a friend. Don't wear headphones when jogging. Have your keys out and ready when going to your car or apartment and pay attention to your surroundings.
Campus police ask anyone with information about the attack to call UWF Police at 850-474-2415.
