TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - School officials said four people
involved in an anti-war demonstration at the University of Alabama
were arrested by campus police and charged with disorderly conduct.
The demonstration was arranged by the Tuscaloosa chapter of
Students for a Democratic Society and was meant to advertise a
planned talk by Jason Hurd of the Asheville, North Carolina chapter
of Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Jenae Stainer, a member of the Tuscaloosa student group, said
today that two students and two non-students were arrested soon
after the Friday demonstration in the student center.
Campus police detained the four from about 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
before taking them to jail and they were released after posting
bond around midnight.
Dean of Students Tim Hebson sent a letter to students Friday
calling the protest "disruptive," "alarming" and "mimicking a
true emergency."
Stainer said the group is discussing plans to protest the
arrests.
