War II has died.
Lieutenant Colonel Charles "Chuck" Dryden was 87. A spokesman
for the National Museum of Patriotism in Atlanta, where Dryden was
on the board of directors, says Dryden died Tuesday in Atlanta from
natural causes.
He was among the first of the roughly 1,000 black men chosen to
be trained as military pilots in Tuskegee, Alabama. Dryden was
selected just four months before Pearl Harbor. He was a member of
the famed 99th Pursuit Squadron and later the 332nd Fighter Group,
which served in North Africa and Italy.
Dryden's 21-year military career also included combat missions
in Korea. He was among the Tuskegee Airmen at last year's ceremony
where they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
