UPDATE Daphne Police say a truck driver was killed when his rig ran off the road and into the woods, catching fire. Traffic Nightmare On I-10
Published: Sun, July 06, 2008 - 6:37 pm
Daphne Police are investigating a wreck that has tied up traffic for hours.
Daphne Police say an 18 wheeler ran off the road on Eastbound I-10 near the Malbis exit around 2:40 this (Sunday) afternoon.
As of 7:00pm, traffic was restricted to one lane and stretched for miles on the I-10 Bayway.
Investigators say the truck driver was killed in the accident. His name will be released once his relatives have been notified.
Witnesses told police it appeared the truck driver was experiencing some sort of medical condition and that the 18-wheeler swerved from lane to lane before leaving the interstate.

More police in the area than state troopers? I guess the operator knew that much~

As in a similar case a few months back the driver of the big rig died behind the wheel and the rig went wild on the interstate. Can you Imagine a propane tanker hitting a heavily populated event or area and igniting. I might be an alarmist but I’ve said it before on here those big rigs need a dead man’s switch on them. Unless the rig is in park or neutral on standards and the hands leave the wheel it kills the engine. It ought to be a law just like seat belts for them.

A highway?!? How about the Alabama State Troopers? What an idiot operater!

The last time I called 911 from the highway in that area, it took ten minutes for the operator to figure out which police department to send.

That’s what water trucks are for, obviously they more of them!

the guy was probably dead long before DFD got there...and when is the last time you saw a fire hydrant on the interstate?!

All areas need a quicker response to diverting traffic from two sides to one instead of sitting there hour after hour and traffic blocking the way for any other emergency traffic.

My condolences to the driver and his/her family and friends.

It took me 2 hours to go 20 miles on I-10 West.  I assumed it was due to an accident, but was surprised to find out the accident was on the east bound lanes and the traffic back-up on the west side was due to on-lookers.  Come on people!

I heard the Daphne Fire Department kept running out of water, so the guy burned to death.
