State Superintendent Joe Morton named nine Alabama public schools "Torchbearer Schools" this morning. Mobile County schools are most represented on his list with four local elementary schools being honored. The "Torchbearer Schools" are school located in high poverty areas of the state whose students excel in the classroom.

The 2007-2008 Torchbearer Schools are:
North Birmingham Elementary - Birmingham City
Wilkerson Middle - Birmingham City
Lincoln Elementary - Huntsville City
Anna F. Booth Elementary - Mobile County
Indian Springs Elementary - Mobile County
George Hall Elementary - Mobile County
Mary W. Burroughs Elementary - Mobile County
E.D. Nixon Elementary - Montgomery County
Edgewood Elementary - Selma City

Each of the honored schools are scheduled to receive $15,000 at a recognition program being held on Tuesday, January 29th in Montgomery.
