JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Time is running out for homeowners to apply for federal grant money to rebuild property damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina's storm surge.Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Gray Swoope says an advertising and marketing blitz will be aimed at any Gulf Coast homeowners who might be eligible for the state's grant assistance program .
Swoope said FEMA had estimated about 30,000 dwellings had received damage from Katrina's surge after the storm pummeled the Gulf Coast region in August 2005.
Swoope said MDA has received some 27,000 applications for the grant program, leaving a gap of about 3,000 potentially eligible homeowners.
He says -- quote -- "At some point you have to cease taking applications. We're saying the deadline for that would be in the near future."
