Mechanical problems forced a pilot to land his plane in a very unusual place. Darrell Findley lives in Orange Beach and out of curiosity strolled out onto his back deck when he heard fire truck sirens getting closer and closer. "I looked down here and I see the plane on the beach."
The single engine airplane made a perfect landing on a long, flat stretch of sand behind the Phoenix II West Condominium under construction. Orange Beach firefighter Kevin Langford says his department got the call a little after eleven o'clock in the morning. "Our concern was to just make sure that it wasn't a plane crash and there was no danger to the citizens or anybody on the beach."
No one was hurt and after about an hour on the beach, some men fueled the plane up and it took off without incident. It's something Findley never thought he'd see. "I've taken a lot of pictures of a lot of things but not an airplane on the beach, it's unreal."
